What if you changed your perception of marketing?

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, it's Laura. I wanted to talk to you today about the concept of perception. I was just watching a video that was talking about the importance of how you perceive things. Everything just is, and you can make it good, or you can make it bad. How you perceive it will affect how you interact with it and the outcomes you achieve.

So it got me thinking about the concept of, what's your perception of marketing? So when you think of marketing your business, is it something that you dread and you avoid and it feels icky, or is it something that you love and it feels light and it feels easy? Well, if you're in the first camp, it might be because of the perception that you have of marketing. It might be based on a past experience, something you've experienced yourself. You might feel like it's selling and it feels like you're trying to rip people off or trick people or something like that. So you may have your own past experience that's created a perception of what marketing is.

So I wanted to offer you a different perspective in thinking of your own perspective. So what if instead of thinking of it as marketing, you take that word out of your vocabulary and think of it as client attraction? What if you thought of it as the clients that have the problem that you can help them solve are already out there and your job is to put yourself out there and put out content and information to connect with those people, to attract them to you?

Does that feel lighter? Does that feel something that feels easier to you or what if you thought of it as relationship development? When you meet someone new in your life, and you're developing a relationship, it's a matter of getting to know each other and developing trust and learning about each other's interests and over time you develop a friendship much like over time you develop a relationship with a client.

So maybe that makes it feel easy. Whichever one of those feels easiest to you, is the perception that you should adopt. So if you have a perception that marketing is hard and you don't like doing it, it is not going to happen. It's going to become the last thing on your to-do list. It's going to be the thing you avoid with everything that you can. But the reality is that if you're trying to build a business, if you're trying to grow a brand, you need to market your business. No business can exist without marketing. So it's really important to think about your perception of what marketing is and find a way to approach it that feels good and right for you.
